The city of Tivoli is the ancient city of Tibvr. Tivoli's origins predate those of Rome. A crisp and distinct mountain dialect can still be heard today in the country and around the olive groves- oil/olio is ogghiu and olive/oliva, liva. The area of Tivoli is known for travertine stone, for the abundance of water and aqueducts which serve Rome (ancient and modern), and for its famous gardens, especially Villa Adriana and Villa d'Este with its water follies, waterfalls, and musical water organ.
